Tory Lanez has been charged with a third felony in the 2020 shooting case against Megan Thee Stallion, whose trial is now underway.
During Monday's (December 5) hearings, the prosecution introduced a new felony charge for "discharging a handgun with gross carelessness,".
With Lanez being a Canadian citizen, the charge carries a six-year term and, if convicted, might still qualify as a "deportable offense."
If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum sentence of 22 years and eight months in prison. "Felony assault with a semiautomatic firearm" and "carrying a loaded, unlicensed firearm in a vehicle" are among the additional charges. There are potentially lower accusations for causing serious bodily harm.
The jury selection procedure for the celebrity trial began on November 28, and opening remarks are scheduled for December 12.
Lanez was released from house arrest ahead of his trial and given permission to leave his home to properly prepare for the case with his legal team. "Mr. Peterson's home arrest was revoked despite our office's protests," said the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office in a statement.
The home arrest order was issued in October in relation to an argument the Canadian singer had with August Alsina in Chicago a month previously.
Judge David Herriford noted that he was removing Tory's home arrest "mainly for the trial preparation."
Lanez is suspected of firing at Megan in July 2020 and injuring both of her feet. The trial was supposed to begin in September, but it was postponed when Tory requested a court to delay the start date because his legal counsel was distracted with other trials.
In October 2020, the L.A. County District Attorney's Office charged Tory Lanez with felony assault with a semiautomatic handgun and one count of carrying a loaded, unlicensed firearm in a vehicle.
