Renowned rapper Chino XL, whose real name was Derek Emmanuel Barbosa, has passed away at the age of 50.

The announcement was made through Chino XL's official Instagram account, which confirmed the heartbreaking news.
The family statement read, “The family of Derek Keith Barbosa, professionally known as Chino XL, is devastated to relay the news of his passing.” His family described the profound impact he had on their lives, emphasizing his roles as a father and mentor.
Chino XL leaves behind his children—Chynna, Bella, Lyric, Kiyana; his stepson, Shawn; and his beloved grandchildren, Emmy, Emery, Chris, Luis, and Dyani.
He is also mourned by his mother, Carole, and his longtime former partner, Stephanie.
In a touching tribute, Chino’s daughters reflected on his legacy. They stated:
“Our father had many titles — King of Punchlines, Puerto Rican Superhero — but the most important one was Girl Dad. He gave us his strength, straightforwardness, and a realistic perspective on life. The main thing we feel now is that our Dad is at peace, and so we are at peace.”
As fans and peers remember Chino, producer Domingo shared his thoughts, calling him “one of the best lyricists in the game” and a “legendary artist and friend.”
Domingo hailed Chino’s talent, highlighting how it shone brightly since they first met in the early 1990s.
Chino XL made a significant mark on the hip-hop scene with his debut album, "Here to Save You All", released in 1996.
The album was lauded for its intricate wordplay and profound themes, earning a devoted fanbase. However, it also ignited a notorious feud with Tupac Shakur, famously culminating in diss tracks that defined the era.
Chino XL's family has requested privacy during this difficult time, with plans for a memorial service to be announced soon.
