Ice Cube Reflects on Life Before Rap in New Single “Before Hip Hop” from Upcoming Album ‘Man Up’

Legendary rapper Ice Cube is back with a powerful new message. Just months after his 2024 release Man Down, Cube is gearing up to drop its follow-up, Man Up, on September 12.

The West Coast icon has kicked things off with a compelling lead single titled “Before Hip Hop.”

The track immediately sets the tone for what fans can expect from Man Up, Cube’s sharpest and most confrontational project in years.

True to its name, “Before Hip Hop” reflects on what life looked like in underserved communities before rap music even existed.

Far from glorifying crime or violence, Cube uses the song to challenge the narrative that hip-hop is to blame for society’s deeper issues.

The single doubles as a reality check and history lesson, calling out those who ignore the systemic problems that predated rap's rise.

“It’s easy and lazy to look at what’s going on in a lot of communities and blame hip hop .... Before Hip Hop’ is calling out the revisionist, showing how crime and injustice existed long before hip hop music. We didn’t cause it, we just called it.”

Ice Cube Drops “Before Hip Hop” as the First Look at His ‘Man Up’ Album:

With a gritty instrumental backing his verses, Ice Cube uses his signature delivery to drive the point home.

He paints a picture of the social conditions that existed before he ever picked up a mic, reminding listeners that music was a response, not a cause, to real-world struggles.

While fans shouldn’t expect the raw aggr*ssion of De*th Certificate or AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, Cube still shows he’s lyrically sharp. His flow is seasoned, and the message is clear; even if his studio output has slowed down over the years, his voice in hip-hop remains as strong as ever.

“Before Hip Hop” not only builds anticipation for Man Up, it reaffirms Cube’s place as one of the genre’s most politically aware and unapologetic voices.

As the rap landscape shifts with every generation, Ice Cube proves that experience, perspective, and purpose still matter.
