Lil Eazy-E shared his sentiments on the occasion, stating that his father had finally received the recognition he deserved—a monumental street in the city he helped put on the map. He emphasized that, although it took time, the timing aligned with God's plan.
Alonzo Williams, the President of the Compton Entertainment Chamber of Commerce, played a pivotal role in making this tribute happen. Recognizing Compton's rich history, Williams saw an opportunity to highlight the city's hip-hop history, especially during the 50th anniversary of hip-hop. Approaching the City Council with the idea, they embraced it, leading to the renaming of Eazy Street.
Eazy-E, born Eric Wright, passed away at the age of 31 on March 26, 1995, succumbing to AIDS-induced pneumonia. His announcement of being diagnosed with the virus came just days before his death at a Hollywood news conference. The street renaming serves as a poignant and lasting tribute to the influential gangsta rap pioneer in the city he called home.
