Cozz Confirms Dreamville Still Independent After JID’s Misstatement About Label Being Sold

Rumors about Dreamville Records being sold sent shockwaves through the hip-hop community, but one of the label’s core artists is setting the story straight.

JID Sparks Confusion About Dreamville’s Ownership

During a recent appearance on The Joe Budden Podcast, JID, one of the breakout stars of J. Cole’s Dreamville, raised eyebrows when he said:
“They didn’t go public, but Dreamville sold Dreamville.”
His statement immediately sparked speculation across social media, with fans questioning if the beloved label had been sold off behind closed doors.

The comment quickly went viral, and so did the confusion. Cozz Responds: “Dreamville Wasn’t Sold”

To calm the buzz, Cozz, a longtime Dreamville artist, spoke with TMZ to clarify what actually went down.

He made it clear: Dreamville is still independent, and there was no sale of the label.
“To clear that up, They did not sell Dreamville. They just ended their partnership with UMG. And, yes … We all got pieces of the pie. [Cole] didn’t have to do that, either. That was just something he decided to do as a token of gratitude for rocking with him and taking the Dreamville ride with him for all these years.”

Cozz Shuts Down Dreamville Sale Rumors After JID’s Comment:

He said that although the label split from Universal Music Group and its Interscope distribution deal, this move wasn't a sale it was a strategic decision.

Cozz also revealed that J. Cole generously made sure everyone involved got a piece of the pie, showing love to the entire team.

According to Cozz, the decision to share ownership or profits wasn’t contractual it came from J. Cole’s respect for his team and commitment to those who helped build Dreamville into what it is today.

Dreamville co-founder Ibrahim “Ib” Hamad also took to X (formerly Twitter) to reassure fans that the label hadn’t been sold. He backed Cozz’s version of the story and emphasized the label’s independence.
Meanwhile, Dreamville rapper Bas touched on the shift during an interview with Elliott Wilson, calling the UMG exit a “W” for the entire roster.

Despite the chatter, it’s clear: Dreamville remains under its own control, now operating independently after moving on from its major label partnership.

With artists like J. Cole, JID, Ari Lennox, EarthGang, Cozz, and Bas still in the mix, the label continues to be a powerhouse in the hip-hop scene.
