The conversation took place during the podcast’s premiere episode, which dropped on Sunday, August 17.
As the two New York rap figures discussed legacy and influence in the game, the topic of Nas, one of rap's most respected lyricists, naturally came up. That’s when Fivio dropped a bombshell.
“I’m not saying that the man is wack, he’s not a legend, I got a song with the n***a—I got a song on the album and the album got a Grammy. But I can’t sit there and say a Nas bar to you or a song.”
Fivio Foreign and Nas Linked on Track, But Lyrics Don’t Stick:
The comment stunned many fans, considering Nas’ legendary status in hip-hop for classics like Illmatic, It Was Written, and Stillmatic.
“I understand. That’s what I want the people to know—but I can ‘cause Nas was my era. … I came up f**king with Nas. I know the Nas shit. … But moving forward, I started a whole new era in a whole new genre and a generation of people. I just be doing me.”
Jones’ response subtly highlighted the generational gap between classic East Coast lyricists and the newer wave of drill rappers, such as Fivio Foreign.
Still, Fivio’s remarks added fuel to the ongoing discussion about hip-hop history, lyricism, and how much today’s artists are tapped into the culture’s roots.
The backlash online has been intense, with many fans calling out Fivio for what they see as disrespect toward Nas, while others argue he was just being honest about his own musical influences.
Regardless of where you stand, one thing is clear: Fivio Foreign's comments reignited the generational conversation in rap—and reminded us that in hip-hop, respect for legends still matters.
