Wilson recounted that his approach was more about encouragement than intervention. Wilson explained:
“I got them back together, I got them to talk, Around the time when Drake was doing the tour with Lil Wayne and they had a show in Queens, Drake came backstage and hugged me and was like, ‘I spoke to Hov. We’re figuring it out.’ He was excited that they had finally talked.”
Inside the Jay-Z and Drake Reconciliation: Elliott Wilson’s Role Revealed
When questioned about his exact method for fostering this reconciliation, Wilson humorously dismissed the notion of any dramatic gestures. He clarified with a laugh:
“No, just encouraging them to talk to each other, that’s all. I’m not Farrakhan. I didn’t put the play together [laughs].”
The rift between the two had been fueled by competitive tensions. Early collaborations like “Off That” and “Light Up” hinted at mutual respect, but competitive barbs began to surface.
In 2011, Drake’s lines on DJ Khaled’s “I’m On One” hinted at a challenge, with lyrics like:
“I’m just feeling like the throne is for the taking / Watch me take it.”
Although Drake later downplayed the diss, the tension lingered. Despite a brief reconciliation on 2013’s “Pound Cake,” the rapport between the two was short-lived.
An interview with Rolling Stone in 2014 reignited the discord, as Drake’s comments seemed to slight Jay-Z once again.
Wilson’s role in rekindling their relationship highlights the importance of direct communication in resolving conflicts, even among the biggest names in Hip Hop.
